"Kufuor bus" drivers to go on strike

Workers of the Metro Mass Transit in Kumasi are likely to embark on strike in protest at what they said are poor working conditions and unjustifiable treatment being meted out to them.

The drivers and conductors of the company claim they have been accused of fraud resulting in huge losses to the company. More than half of the buses have been grounded in Kumasi and some workers rendered jobless.

The workers said the industrial action is aimed at drawing attention to the unfair treatment they are receiving from the company.

Reliable sources told Luv FM that the workers have been holding secret meetings and are yet to agree on a strike because they fear being victimized. This is because they have allegedly been warned not to make public their grievances.

Speaking on condition of anonymity some of the workers confirmed that they were contemplating organised protest against the management of MMT. They said they want the management to conduct investigations into allegations that some of them were involved in fraud and to punish those found guilty instead of accusing them without evidence of misconduct.

Apart from what they said are poor conditions of service, they told Luv FM that they are not happy about management refusal to give them appointment letters. They also complain that management is not paying Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions for them.

The local managers of MMT in Kumasi refused talking to journalists because they said they have been instructed from Accra not to comment.
