Former President John Mahama has revealed he misses his former boss Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, five years after his passing.

The fifth anniversary of Mills’ death was celebrated July 24, 2017 at the Asomdwee Park in Accra. He was Ghana’s first sitting president to have died in office and was succeeded by Mahama, who was then his vice in 2012, ahead of a crucial general election.

Speaking to GhOne TV’s Kafui Dey after the celebration, former president Mahama opined: “I miss him very much.”

He described Prof. Mills as a man of “great moral courage and strength”. According to Mahama, he admired Mills, who was touted as an epitome of peace, because of his “inclusiveness, humility and a person who was a father for all…”

Mahama added, “Unfortunately, Ghana continues to be torn apart by partisan differences and that was what Prof. Mills tried to scale. We must remember his characteristics and so try to live up to those values. As we celebrate the 5th anniversary let’s remember what he feels for.”

Prof. Mills contested and lost the 2000 and 2004 elections, but returned to beat Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 polls. With just six months to end his first term he died on July 24, 2012.
