I am highly disappointed in Abedi Pele- Gyan fumes

Striker Asamoah Gyan has expressed disappointment in comments made by Abedi Pele over moves by Ghanaian players to perceived less competitive leagues mainly in Asia.

There have been a steady increase of transfer of Ghanaian players to lucrative leagues in Asia since Asamoah Gyan stunned the world with his big money move from Sunderland to Al Ain in 2011.

Sulley Muntari has recently joined Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad – joining the likes of Rashid Sumiala and – who plays in Kuwait – and Gyan in the Asian region.

There were attempts by Kevin-Prince Boateng and Mubarak Wakaso to also secure moves to Asia but they fell through for varied reasons.

The rush by several Ghanaian players to join clubs in Asian is widely believed to be inspired by the mouthwatering financial gains they stand to benefit from.

Many including Abedi Pele however believe this trend could have serious quality problems for the Black Stars in future since the leagues in Asia are not as competitive as the ones in Europe.

“I am very shocked by the comments made by him,” Gyan told Angel FM.

“I don’t know whether he actually made such comments but if it’s true, then I will be very surprised and highly disappointed.

“When I first made the decision to move from Sunderland to Al Ain and when a lot of people were criticizing me, he was one of the persons behind me giving me the support.

“He adviced and gave me the support because first and foremost he had played there before.

“I looked up to him as a legend. I believe no other player in Ghana has played the kind of football he played in his time so his support meant a lot to me.

“And now to here he is making contrary views, is very shocking and highly disappointing. It makes me wonder whether the support he initially gave me was genuine.”
