Govt procuring funds for accommodation of Police

Accra, March 15, GNA- Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of the Interior on Thursday announced that arrangements were underway to procure funding for a major accommodation project for the Ghana Police Service. He said it was the intention of the Ghana Police Service to put up residential accommodation for officers in the border town of Paga when the arrangements for the funding were finalized.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah made the announcement on the floor of Parliament when answering a question asked on behalf of Mr Abuga Pele, MP- NDC- Chiana Paga on what steps were being taken to provide the Paga border town police with a residential accommodation. He said Cabinet was holding discussion on the sourcing of funds and promised to inform Parliament on the outcome when the discussion were completed.

There was however a contention between Mr Charles Hodogbey, NDC South Tongu, and the Minister if there was a Police Station at Mepe, in the South Dayi Constituency or not.

Mr Hodogbey had asked a question on behalf of Mr Joe Gidisu-NDC- Central Tongu, if the Ministry had plans to establish a Police Post at Mafi Dove considering the growing population and the social challenges of the communities in that area.

Mr Kan-Dapaah answered, "currently the Police Administration does not have immediate plans to establish a Police Post at Mafi Dove." He added that Mepe and Aveyime Police Stations effectively policed Mafi Dove, but Mr Hodogbey insisted that there was no Police Station at Mepe.

As Mr Kan Dapaah argued that there was a Police Station at Mepe, even if in a rented premises but Mr Hodogbey insisted there was none and asked the Minister to provide the date when the Mepe Police Station was established.

Mr Kan-Dapaah told House that he had not visited Mepe and he was relying on the information he was given by his officers. The Minister told the House upon a question by Nii Amasah Namole Namoale NDC-Dadekotopon, that rehabilitation of Cantonments Prisons Barracks in the Constituency was being done in phases.

"So far, the old windows, doors and frames have been replaced together with the electrical system. Sanitation facilities for all the block of flats have been provided. Rehabilitation works on the blocks are planned for the coming years", Nii Namoale said.

He added that provision had been made for a major rehab of flat D. Mr Kan Dapaah said in an answer to a question by Mr Stephen Amoaonor Kwao NDC-Upper Manya Krobo that rehabilitation works would also given be given the needed attention on the Assesewa District, Otrokpe and Sekesua Police Stations as soon as funds would be made available. 15 March 07
