GPRTU Can't Pay Social Security Of Guards

Ho The Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU) cannot pay social security contributions on behalf of its guards because they are paid allowances and not salaries. Mr Jonathan Tetteh-Hago, First National Trustee of the union, said this at the Volta Regional Executive Council meeting at Ho on Wednesday when the issue came up for discussion. Mr Tetteh-Hago said the vast majority of those connected with the union are paid allowances and there is no justification in singling out the guards for preferential treatment. He said the Guards Unit, which was created out of the necessity to help its members to earn stipends to cushion them against hardships while helping to maintain order at the lorry stations and on the roads, is not governed by any collective bargaining agreement.
