GHC38 million budgeted for LEAP – Gov’t

Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has announced that her outfit will spend GHC38 million on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) this year.

This, she said, would improve on the lives of the extreme poor in the society.
She said GHC12 million out of the total was released in the first quarter of the year while GHC12 million was let go in the second quarter.

Nana Oye Lithur disclosed this at Gnani in the Yendi Municipality during her tour to a local witch’s camp, where she presented assorted items including slippers, cooking oil, cartons of milk and rice to the residents.

The minister also visited Nadundo in the Mion District where she verified the registration of some pregnant women and children under-one year registered under the LEAP 1000 project.

The LEAP 1,000 is a project supporting the beneficiaries to get nutritious meal for full growth and development.

Nana Oye Lithur said 90,000 households and 360,000 persons would benefit from the LEAP, which increased from GHC44.00 to GHC62.00.

She said the money would be paid in September and would benefit about 150,000 persons suffering from extreme poverty.

Mr Dzigbordi Agbekporni, LEAP Manager said the LEAP 1000 project would span two years and would take care of the malnourished children and improve the nutritional status of their mothers.

Mr Alhassan Shei, Tindana of Gnani witches camp appealed to the minister to intervene in providing the facility with potable water, educational facilities and a clinic.
