Floods claim two lives and displace 2,000 in Eastern region

Floods in Koforidua and some parts of the Eastern Region have so far claimed two lives and displaced about 2000 people, according to the regional branch of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

The regional capital has for the past three weeks been experiencing floods following torrential rains in that part of the country.

Other places such as Fanteakwa North, Asuogyaman and Afram Plains are going through such ordeals with hundreds of households reportedly displaced due to the destruction of their properties by the floods.

The Eastern Regional NADMO officer, Ransford Owusu told Fiifi Banson in interaction with Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM on Monday that “the Koforidua flood experience is devastating.”

“For the past three weeks, the Koforidua Township has been suffering from floods. About 2,000 people have been seriously affected. Two people have lost their lives in the process so it tells you that the entire town is going through some difficulties,” he noted.

When asked what measures NADMO is putting in place to save the situation, Mr. Owusu said the disaster management organization in conjunction with the Police is working assiduously to protect lives and properties.

That aside, they have deplored some officers on the ground who are embarking on a save and rescue mission.

Several people who were trapped by the floods, he noted, have been saved through the exercise.

NADMO, he further stated, is also in touch with the surveillance unit of the Ghana Health Service to ensure that high standards of cleanliness are maintained during and after the floods to prevent the spread of diseases.
