Court fines driver for causing harm to passengers

Akim Oda (E/R), Aug. 25, GNA – The Akim Oda Magistrate Court in the Birim Central Municipality, has imposed a fine of GH¢300 on Samuel Coffie, a taxi driver for knocking down two passengers.

Coffie, charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm, admitted the offence.

He would go to prison for 24 months if he fails to pay the fine.

The passengers were knocked down just after alighting from another taxi cab at Akim Oda Old Town.

The victims, Madam Vida Damfo and Madam Comfort Appiah sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Akim Oda Government Hospital, but were later referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further treatment.

Presenting the facts of the case, Police Inspector Kingsley Antwi told the court presided over by Mr Albert Owusu Annor that on May 7 this year, around 1930 hours, the convict was driving from Akim Oda Old Town towards Oda Central, when he knocked down the victims on the road.

Inspector Antwi said just as Madam Damfo and Madam Appiah alighted from a Toyota Corolla taxi cab with registration number AS 3657 S, Coffie carelessly ran into them, thereby negligently causing harm to both victims.
