CHRAJ investigating Mahama an exercise in futility - Karbo

A deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Anthony Karbo has cast doubt on the credibility of investigations to be carried out by the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) into alleged acts of corruption leveled against President John Mahama.

According to him, he does not see the constitutional body doing a fair job that may establish the President’s complicity in the case which has been the subject of controversy among Ghanaians for almost two weeks.

President John Mahama has come under intense pressure in the past week following an allegation of corruption leveled against him after he received a $100,000 car gift from his Burkinabe contractor friend who has undertaken some construction works in Ghana.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for a bipartisan investigation into the allegation to establish his complicity or otherwise in the case. The party further dared President Mahama to speak publicly to the issue.

The NPP Flagbearer Nana Akufo Addo addressing attendees at the ongoing International Young Democrat Union’s (IYDU) Freedom Forum in Accra on Thursday described as a “remarkable spectacle” President John Mahama’s decision to accept a car gift from a Burkinabe contractor.

But President John Mahama while addressing the people of Ashaiman during his ‘Accounting to the people tour’ Wednesday described the allegation as baseless.

The youth wing of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a private citizen have so far petitioned CHRAJ for investigations into the matter and to establish that the President violated constitutional provisions.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has also made public its intention to petition the Commission.

However speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show, Anthony Karbo who is also a Parliamentary Candidate for Lawra stated that CHRAJ’s investigation of President Mahama will most likely be a wasteful exercise.

“The former head of CHRAJ boss herself was sacked following acts of corruption and misappropriation of funds removed. I’ve been told that three petitions are before CHRAJ; how is CHRAJ going to constitute a panel to sit on this matter when it is not properly constituted.

“We all know that it is the President who must appoint somebody through the processes to head CHRAJ. So the President is suddenly going to make this appointment for the person to sit on this case involving the President himself? The President has said we are making baseless accusations, these are the issues.”
