Accra Poly wins TIGO UPAC Basketball tourney

Accra, April 18, GNA - Accra Polytechnic (A-Poly) produced a peerless display to complete the double over their rivals, University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to emerge champions of the 2011 Tigo Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball championship over the weekend.

The A-Poly team attacked with proficiency and made shots from the rebounds whilst putting up a solid defense and their strategy worked perfectly for the 2010 GHAPSA champions.

Man of the championship, Emmanuel Dickson produced an eye-catching display to taunt his opponents with sheer bravado and power play to lead his team beat their opponents 45-30 to send their fans jubilating deep into the night.

A-Poly saw off the same side in their opening game 31-23 and it was obvious their target to win the ultimate was set in motion. They went ahead to annihilate Sunyani Polytechnic in their final group game to set up a semi-final date with the University of Ghana who beat Kumasi Polytechnic but lost their second game to Takoradi Polytechnic. Earlier, Derrick Brefo, Benjamin Debrah and the man popularly referred to as 91ill Nana' helped UEW post a narrow 34-32 success over Zone A bridesmaids Takoradi Polytechnic in their semi-final clash. It was an end to end action as the game swung from one end of the court to the other. The fighting spirit and chemistry of T-Poly never went unnoticed as they proved why they remain the current first runner up at the Polytechnic level in the country. They atoned for their semi-final blip to beat the University of Ghana to win bronze in the final analysis.

The well-attended event was graced by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Clement Kofi Humado, Head of Brands Communication of Tigo, Nana Ampratwum, Chairman of the Greater Accra Basketball Association, Benjamin Baafi, Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, Dr Emmanuel Owusu Ansah with the Registrar of Accra Polytechnic Mrs Rita Kaine in full swing.
