Three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele, has bemoaned low number of Ghanaian players plying their trade in the top leagues with most of the top starts opting to sign for clubs in the Arab World and other exotic destinations.

The ‘Maestro’, as he is affectionately called, says the nation’s football is heading for a nosedive with the rampant rate at which top Black stars players are moving to leagues where competition is non existent.

Several top Ghanaian players have been inking deals with clubs in Asia, with Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan’s move to Chinese League side Shangahai SIPG dominating the headlines a couple of months ago.

Former AC Milan midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari has also joined Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad Jeddah, and rumours were rife that Mubarak Wakaso and Emmanuel Agyeman Badu could join at the club.

Ghana last won the African Cup of Nations 33 years ago, and Abedi believes the Black Stars drought could prolong if the current trend is not curtailed.

“There is a danger…the future is not bright at all and I’m very very worried”, Abedi told Citi FM.

“The typical example that you can say is what is actually happening”,

“You can see most of our players are now going to the Arab World..are going to various countries which football is not on the highest level”,

“What is the future if you think we have?, we don’t have a future”,

“If we don’t players playing in France or Italy or Germany, very soon we will have a serious problem and we will be seeing the situation crumbling crumbling gradually and then we start blaming people

“Today you can look around yourself and then ask how many players do we have who are playing in the top leagues…..and when you answer that question you see that the danger is still ahead of”, he added
