The horrifying tragedy that drowned the spirt of Ghanaians; the twin fire and flood disaster saw several precious lives and property destroyed that fateful night.

An avoidable disaster, as many described it, left in its wake a cruel awakening to reality - a city engulfed in filth. Two years since the rude awakening and not much appears to have been done about the situation many have bemoaned for decades.

As the country marks 2 years of the disaster on Saturday, June 3, 2017, city authorities have taken up the mantle, in collaboration with waste management experts Zoomlion to rid the city of filth.

In line with President Akufo-Addo's vision to make Accra clean, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. joined forces to clean the area Friday morning.

The exercise had the entire Kwame Nkrumah Circle area cleared of filth.

Speaking to Ghanaweb, Assembly Member for the area, Hendrick Kinnah, indicated that the exercise was to sensitize and remind Ghanaians of the importance of keeping the city clean to avoid such unforeseen circumstances.

“Tomorrow is exactly the two years so we are vest to celebrate the event, to educate and sensitize the public about the wrong in throwing rubbish everywhere that is why today we are organizing a cleanup exercise”, he said.

He indicated that the move was a follow up on previous instances where the area had been cleaned. According to him, Ghanaians have a responsibility of working collaboratively towards ensuring a clean country.
