The American Field Service (AFS), Ghana, last week, organized a major event to introduce its new National Director, Mr. Kwesi Sagoe and honour, Mr. Emmanuel Annan the out-going Director, who has diligently served the international, non-governmental and non-profit organization for 23 years.
The occasion was also used to welcome members of the Team Mission 2008 and officially commission the new AFS office in Cantonments, Accra.
Mr. Sagoe in a brief speech after his introduction thanked the AFS board for the opportunity offered him to serve as national director after having been closely associated with the organization for many years.
He commended Mr. Annan for his dedicated service to AFS over the years and pledged to build on the foundation he had laid.
AFS, he explained is “one of the largest community-based volunteer organizations in the world, present in approximately 60 countries. And in its 50th year of operation as an intercultural exchange organization, 100,000 volunteers worldwide support it. It provides exchange programs for close to 10,000 participants annually, and offers close to 1,000 bilateral exchange programs across the globe annually”.
In his parting speech, Mr. Annan who was presented with a Toyota Corolla vehicle in appreciation of his long service thanked the AFS board and colleagues for the cooperation given him during his tenure.
AFS, he said: “enables people to act as responsible, global citizens working for peace and understanding in a diverse world. It acknowledges that peace is a dynamic concept threatened by injustice, inequity and intolerance”. AFS, he further emphasized: “encourages respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, without distinction as to race, sex, language, religion or social status. AFS activities are based on its core values of dignity, respect for differences, harmony, sensitivity and tolerance”, he added.
To crown it all, the outgoing Director recounted some of the good old times and pledged to offer his expertise anytime it is required.
Also in appreciation of his service, Mr. Bert Vercamer, an AFS International Consultant who graced the occasion presented a certificate of recognition to Mr. Annan on behalf of the global organization.
AFS, he said would eternally be grateful to Mr. Annan for his committed service of well over two decades.
Miss Sheila Asare and Miss Abena Amoah both board members of the AFS cut the tape to commission the new office, after which the new director conducted the media and invited guests round.
AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization, which provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
Team Mission refers to the AFS volunteers who visit on an annual basis. AFS started the student exchange programme in Ghana from 1967 under the name of AFS Ghana.
